Sales professionals are vital to the UK economy, their efforts driving growth in every corner of British business. According to the Institute of Sales & Marketing Management (ISMM) sales professionals make up 7% of the UK workforce – an estimated 2.2 million people, half a million of whom are in managerial roles. Jobseekers with the right aptitude and skills can carve out rewarding careers in FMCG sales, construction industry sales, automotive sales, retail, pharmaceutical sales, energy sales, IT, telecoms and financial services sales.
The sales job market is improving in 2013. According to research by Hays, 47% of companies involved in sales are hiring the same number of people today as they were pre-recession, and the outlook for further improvement is considered good.
Plans are also underway for the professionalisation of sales, with the ISMM working with government in a bid to make the profession more credible, better trained and to create proper career paths for younger people.
